Senate OKs reviews of power plant gases

Iowa natural resources officials, in reviewing permit applications for proposed power plants, would be required to consider the emission of greenhouse gases, under a bill the Senate approved Monday.

The proposal would apply primarily to coal-fired power plants, said supporters of Senate File 485. Critics have said the legislation would give the Department of Natural Resources too much authority.

The bill was approved on a party-line vote and sent to the House for more debate.
