| America has virtually limitless potential to tap the energy of the sun. Solar energy is clean, safe, proven and available everywhere, and the price of many solar energy technologies is declining rapidly. By adopting solar energy on a broad scale, the nation can address our biggest energy challenges – our dependence on fossil fuels and the need to address global warming – while also boosting our economy. | |

| America’s current fleet of gasoline-powered cars and trucks leaves us dependent on oil, contributes to air pollution problems that threaten our health, and produces large amounts of global warming pollution. “Plug-in” cars are emerging as an effective way to lower global warming emissions, oil use, and smog. A plug-in car is one that can be recharged from the electric grid. Plug-in cars come in two types: plug-in hybrids that are paired with small gasoline engines, and fully electric vehicles that consume no gasoline at all. | |

| In 2008, Iowans drove 2 million fewer miles, an eight percent decrease from 2007 that was the largest relative decrease in the country. Many of these trips were replaced with public transportation. In fact, transit ridership grew by 5 percent statewide. Environment Iowa found that Iowa saved the gasoline equivalent of 15,300 cars by using public transportation last year, or nearly 9 million gallons, preventing 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide from warming the planet. The message of this report is clear: People are voting with their feet by driving less and taking more public transportation. Congress should listen to these voters and invest more in public transportation opportunities like high-speed rail and buses which will increase our energy independence and reduce global warming pollution. | |

| This report finds that Iowa households would save an average of $282 per year and 6,200 sustainable jobs would be created in the state over the next ten years if Congress acts now to include strong energy efficiency improvements in energy and climate legislation. The efficiency provisions would prevent 5 million metric tons of global warming emissions from being released here in 2020 alone, the equivalent of taking over 900,000 cars off the road for a year. | |

| America is at an energy crossroad. As a nation, we are dependent on fossil fuels at a time of growing demand and dwindling supply. Meanwhile, fossil fuel use continues to impose massive environmental and economic costs. Now our country must choose between paying to continue the status quo and investing in a new energy future. | |

| Our reliance on dirty energy is fueling global warming, harming our health, threatening our security and stalling our economy. Burning coal, oil and gas for energy and transportation is responsible for 80 percent of U.S. global warming pollution and most of our smog and soot pollution. | |
